What is the String™ Augmented Reality SDK?
String™ is a high performance, Software Developer Kit (SDK) aimed at developers who wish to create true augmented reality applications that can be experienced with an iOS device such as iPad 2 or iPhone.
Do I need to be a developer to use String™ ?
Ideally, yes. The quickest way to get into String™ development is to use Unity, the most popular and easiest-to-use 3D game development environment available.
For experienced developers creating their own rendering technology or using third party 3D engines, we also provide a library for OpenGL that supports both GLES1 and GLES2 pipelines.
If you're not a developer, we'll make it easy for you to find and collaborate with one via our imminent Developer Portal.
Are you going to release for Android?
Yes! We're in the process of porting it as we speak and the ETA is Q3/Q4. Keep an eye on our website for more details.
So why is everyone excited about String™ ?
String™ is extremely fast at tracking images. So when you move your device's camera, the virtual 3D content updates so quickly it looks like it's right there with you in the real world. In fact, it's the fastest commercially available AR technology on iOS right now.
Using only 120KB at runtime and less than 10% of the CPU, String™ also has a tiny footprint, which means you have more resources to do the important stuff: creating great content for your users.
We've also made it very simple to use. If you're using Unity as your development environment, it's even easier; you can get up and running without writing a single line of code.
What's with the black borders around the image target?
The black/white border helps String™ to track images with the performance described above. String™ is now seeing widespread adoption from indie developers to large corporates, so users are now becoming familiar with the target format. The border device acts as an immediate indicator to users that rich AR content exists on a billboard, poster, advert, postcard or anywhere else you place your target.
